About This Event

This WaterKenney course, designed and led by Terry Kenney, the Principal Hydrologist and Founder of WaterKenney Hydrology is specifically for professionals responsible for computing streamflow records using the stage–discharge method. With 27 years as a National Surface-Water Specialist in the USGS Water Resources Mission Area, Terry Kenney has supported one of the largest and most respected streamgage networks in the world - over 8,000 stations nationwide. His career has been dedicated to providing technical leadership, training and quality assurance to field teams across the country.

Now Terry brings that experience directly to this course, Stage-Discharge Rating Curve Development and Maintenance.  This is a rare opportunity to learn from a recognized expert through hands-on instruction covering hydraulic controls, rating development, offsets and the practical application of shifts during streamflow record computation.

Participants should have a basic understanding of streamgage operations, including collecting discharge measurements (gaugings) and maintaining stage time-series data. This hands-on course provides step-by-step instruction in the development, and application of simple stage–discharge rating curves. This class is taught following a field-based, empirical approach that is grounded in North American and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) best practices.

What's Included In This Event?

Meet Your Instructor!

Terry Kenney is the Principal Hydrologist and founder of WaterKenney Hydrology and contracts with Aquatic Informatics. He brings decades of experience in training hydrographers throughout the world in streamgage field methods, time-series computation, and rating-curve analysis.

During his 27-year career with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Terry operated streamgages, led hydraulic and hydrologic studies, and served as a National Surface-Water Specialist tasked with supporting hydrographers responsible for the National streamgage network of more than 8,000 stations.

For more than 10 years, Terry served as the National Coordinator, Lead Instructor, and main content developer for the USGS Stage-Discharge Rating Curve Analysis and Streamflow Records Computation courses. He was also an instructor for USGS courses Streamflow Measurements Using ADCPs, Indirect Measurements of Peak Discharge, Hydrographer Hydraulics, and Surface Water Hydraulic Analysis.

In classroom settings, Terry has trained more than 1,000 USGS hydrographers.

Internationally while working for USGS, Terry taught classes in support of the World Meteorological Organization, and US Agency for International Development (USAID) for National Hydrometric Services in Honduras, Iraq, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Bhutan.

As a contractor for Aquatic Informatics Terry has provided training on Aquarius Time Series to customers in the US, UK, New Zealand, and Rwanda.

Through WaterKenney Hydrology, Terry now provides the same depth of expertise and high-level technical support he provided for USGS to help organizations strengthen their hydrologic programs and advance best practices in hydrometric monitoring.
